Pythagoras Greek School

Pythagoras Greek School was founded by George and Anastasia Roubos in 1969. It began with 15 students in one room at the back of their house in a little bayside suburb of Melbourne called Elwood. From its humble beginnings, it grew to become one of the largest Greek schools of the 70s and 80s with six campuses and more than 1000 students. It remains today an innovative and creative school of the Greek language with a deep focus on Greek culture.

The school's goal is to foster a learning environment in which children feel happy and above all proud to be Greek-Australian.

Our students learn to read confidently with understanding; communicate orally; and express their thoughts with clarity and precision. Our brilliant VCE results are a testament to the effectiveness of our language program and the quality, passion and care our teachers show to our students.

Our teachers love sharing their passion of the Greek language and culture. The various customs and traditions of our culture and the richness of our Greek history are embedded throughout the curriculum. Lighting the kandilaki (oil lamp) and announcing namedays; coming to school in fancy dress to celebrate Apokries; commemorating the 25th of March and 28th of October National Days; celebrating the birthday of our national poet, Dionysios Solomos; holding a Red Easter Egg Crack Off Competition; dressing up as Kalikatzarakia for Christmas; and teaching children about our Greek Santa Claus (St Basil) are just some of the wonderful ways we  engage children we with our incredible culture.

In Term 3 we focus on our glorious ancient past. Children are immersed in our Ancient History and Mythology with more dress-ups and project exhibitions.

Other activities include our participation in the 25th of March Parade at the Shrine of Remembrance, Dinner Dances, End of Year Concerts, Tavern Nights for our VCE students and excursions.

People often ask us: "Does your Greek School really do all these things?" Our reply is, "Don't all Greek Schools do the same?"
