Greek Orthodox Easter: Traditions Steeped in History

Holy Saturday ushers in preparations for the joyous Easter feast. The aroma of “mageiritsa” soup, a traditional dish made with lamb offal and herbs, fills the air in most Greek households. At midnight, the church erupts in celebration as the “Holy Light” arrives, symbolizing Christ’s Resurrection. Drumbeats, fireworks, and joyous chants of “Christos Anesti” (Christ is Risen) fill the night as families reunite around festive tables. A playful tradition involves cracking red eggs against each other, with the unbroken egg signifying good luck.
