The Pyrex Piece I Can’t Live Without, According to a Food Editor

There are the essential kitchen tools that no kitchen can be without: a good chef’s knife, a stockpot for soups and pasta, a cheese grater… you get the idea. And then there are the tools that don’t appear essential at first glance, but then wiggle their way into your daily cooking routine until you realize you can no longer live without them.

This was exactly how I came to love my giant measuring cup.

How I Use My Giant Measuring Cup for So Many Tasks

I bought my eight-cup Pyrex measuring cup for the express purpose of straining homemade chicken stock, and for that, it is a superstar. I settle my biggest strainer on top to catch the solids and the cup is large enough to hold all the stock I make. When done, the pour spout and handle make it easy to transfer the stock to storage containers.

I only make stock a few times a year, and the rest of the time, my giant measuring cup was collecting dust and taking up space in the back of my cupboard.

At least until I realized that I could turn Simply Recipes’ beloved banana bread recipe into a one-bowl wonder with the help of this measuring cup.

I melt the butter right in the measuring cup in the microwave, mash the bananas into the melted butter with a fork, and then add the other ingredients. Again, the pour spout and the handle make it easy to scrape the batter into the loaf tins.

With that discovery, I started making more of my favorite baking recipes in my giant measuring cup, like our 3-Ingredient brownie cookies, these blueberry muffins, and virtually any baking recipe that involves a stick of melted butter.

From there, I kept finding more and more ways to put this big ol’ measuring cup to work. I use it to make microwave jam, when I want to save leftover pasta water, and even when prepping make-ahead chopped salads for my weekday lunches since the handle makes it easy to divide the salad between lunch containers. I even use this measuring cup for bottom watering my house plants on the weekends!

Where To Get Your Own Giant Measuring Cup

Sadly, my beloved eight-cup Pyrex measuring cup appears to have been discontinued in the years since purchasing, but never fear! Here are two great substitutes:

  • Le’Raze 8-Cup Measuring Cup: This one looks exactly like the one I have, minus the Pyrex logo. I love that it’s wide and has a flat bottom, which makes mixing batters easy.
  • Amazon Commercial Glass 8-Cup Measuring Cup: Amazon’s version of this measuring cup is slightly taller and more cone-shaped but would work just as well for all the purposes I mention above.
  • If you’re OK with doing some digging, you can find my original Pyrex measuring cup on eBay or other second-hand sites.

I’ve had my measuring cup for at least 10 years, and it has yet to chip or crack despite heavy use. I tend to handwash it mostly because I use it more frequently than I run my dishwasher, but it is dishwasher-safe. I hope you enjoy your giant measuring cup as much as I do!
