We are seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Senior Media Adviser in the Media Team within the Engagement and Communications Branch in our Sydney and Melbourne office locations. This Branch supports the strategic aims of the Fair Work Ombudsman by developing and delivering communication activities that raise awareness of workplace rights and obligations among the community and oversees engagement initiatives relating to key stakeholders.Full-time and part-time hours are available. Offers will be based on candidate performance and operational requirements. This recruitment process will be used to fill a current 12 month Non-Ongoing position. This recruitment process may also be used to fill future Ongoing opportunities over the next 18 months.About the OFWOThe Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman (OFWO) is an independent statutory office established by the Fair Work Act 2009 (Fair Work Act). A range of other conditions may be required depending on the role you are applying for.About the Team and RoleThe Media Team helps to enhance and protect the public profile of the Fair Work Ombudsman by telling stories relating to FWO activities through media channels online, in print, and on radio and TV. We develop newsworthy media materials with practical workplace relations deterrence and educational messages that can be tailored to specific audiences. We deliver media strategies that align with our public regulatory priority sectors and cohorts.The successful applicant will work as part of a busy team of professionals to create media messages and materials. You will have previous experience in a media-related role and possess outstanding written and oral communication skills. You will engage positively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.The candidate will have a high-level understanding of the Australian media landscape and good political awareness. A degree or other qualification in journalism, communications or related field is not essential but will be advantageous. They will possess sound judgement and be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.Typical DutiesThe duties of the Senior Media Adviser include but are not limited to:
- Identify and respond to opportunities to promote and explain the Fair Work Ombudsman’s compliance and enforcement activities as well as our education and assistance functions
- Produce high-quality, succinct and accurate written materials including media releases, talking points for the CEO, and briefing materials in tight timeframes.
- Summarise complex reports, court decisions and other materials and translate them into sharp, engaging messages for media and the public.
- Research and prepare high-quality responses to media inquiries, taking into account external factors and internal viewpoints.
- Collaborate with a range of internal stakeholders to ensure external messaging is consistent and in accordance with the agency’s objectives.
- Work productively with key workplace relations journalists.
- Collate and analyse media publishing and coverage and their trends, including preparing reports for senior FWO staff.
- Other administrative duties as required.
Selection Criteria
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor messages appropriately to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including journalists and FWO business areas.
- Ability to work well under pressure as part of a team to deliver proactive and reactive media-focused initiatives in tight timeframes.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and identify and manage risk while working autonomously in a small team with minimal supervision.
- Excellent understanding of the Australian media landscape and news cycle and what it takes to gain prominent coverage.
