Peter Mac Clinical Flow Cytometry laboratory is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic medical laboratory scientist to join our team in this 12 months fixed term Full-time maternity leave position. The successful applicant will have strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task and able to support the team with sample receipt, triaging and processing, reagent reconstitution and stocktake and instrument maintenance. Experience with flow cytometry processes and instrumentation is essential and strong knowledge and experience with haemato-oncology is strongly desirable.You will have a B App Sc (Medical Science) or equivalent with specific training in Flow Cytometry.

Victorian Department of Health has a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.
As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital are being considered for transition to a new style of service within Local Area Networks. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.

EducationSkillsEssential Requirements

  • B App Sc (Medical Science) or BSc or equivalent with specific training in clinical flow cytometry, haematology and blood film morphology
  • Specific experience in delivering an ISO15189 compliant service
  • Recognised scientific training and competence relevant to the position including experience in clinical flow cytometry
  • Knowledge in haematology, coagulation, morphology, blood bank, analytical methods and information systems (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, LIMS)
  • Professional approach to patient care, service confidentiality and provision of pathology/testing services
  • Demonstrable ability to meet the clinical expectations of clients
  • Demonstrable ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including other scientists, senior scientists, pathologists, nursing staff, clinical staff and researchers
  • Responsible attitude and work ethic

Desirable Requirements

  • Member of Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) or other professional society
  • Participation in APACE CPD Program
  • Experience and technical knowledge in Haematopoietic Progenitor Cell (HPC) processing/transplantaiton

Performance of routine and complex Flow Cytometry duties that contributes to the provision of a safe and effective laboratory service according to laboratory policy and procedures to ensure that workflow through Haematology is smooth and optimalSmooth and efficient operation of daily work-flow, including specimen receipt, tracking, processing, test performance and result/report delivery
Ability to generate high quality results with acceptable turn-around times by appropriate and efficient use of laboratory instruments and methods
Monitors and adheres to key performance indicators
Effective scientific support and integration of routine blood cell processing and evaluation of HPC Cryopreservation work
Ensures own practices meet key performance indicators of the laboratory
Work and communicate effectively with Haematology G1 scientists, technicians and trainees
Communicate and work effectively with all Core Lab team.
Communicate and work effectively with Anatomical Pathology and Molecular Pathology teams.2.Assay and method developmentParticipate in the validation and implementation of new flow cytometry methods, reagents and instruments, under direction of the Senior Scientist, Principal Scientist and Head of Haematopathology3. Flow Cytometry tests are performed and reported in a timely mannerEnsure flow cytometry tests are performed within agreed acceptable turn around times
Ensure overdue and pending test lists are attended to in a timely manner4.Laboratory documentation is current and NATA compliant Under direction of Senior Scienitst, ensure assays and related SOPs are controlled and validated as appropriate
Under direction of Senior Scienitst, ensure that reagents and other consumables are maintained and quality controlled such that they meet relevant material specifications5.Equipment is calibrated and maintained according to laboratory policy and procedures Under direction of Senior Scienitst, ensure that flow cytometry laboratory equipment records are completed including start-up procedures, maintenance records, quality assurance and shutdown procedures according to laboratory, NATA and ISO 15189 standards and protocols
Key Operator standard of training is obtained for all instruments6.Clinically significant results are reported to requesting clinician according to laboratory protocol Episode records indicate the results were communicated to the clinician as per laboratory procedures.
