Cornflake Sunset announces new song, ‘Red Lines Horizontal’
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Melbourne, Victoria – Cornflake Sunset is excited to announce the release of ‘Red Lines Horizontal’ the first track from their debut album, Double Portrait.
‘Red Lines Horizontal’ is available everywhere on Friday September 6.
Cornflake Sunset is the singer-songwriter nom de plume of acclaimed poet and writer, Luke Beesley, whose latest book, In the Photograph, is currently shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards (announced September 13).
Cornflake Sunset songs are a literary folk-rock – absurd, intertextual, visual.
‘Red Lines Horizontal’ takes its dense, playful lyrics from a poem in Beesley’s book New Works on Paper. The song is a wild homage to Yoko Ono and myriad of other artists, musicians, writers and painters.
“I always have several drafts of poems lying around,” said Beesley. “At some point I realised that to create a song, I could spread them out on the floor and hover over them with my guitar.”
“I love musicians who have the highest standards for their lyrics, such as David Berman or Leonard Cohen, both of whom were fine poets.”
Cornflake Sunset songs have the lyrical precision and strangeness of Bill Callahan or Aldous Harding, sung in a voice that sits somewhere between Neil Young, Loudon Wainwright III and Magnolia Electric Co.’s Jason Molina.
On ‘Red Lines Horizontal’, Luke is joined by award-winning musicians: double bassist Helen Svoboda and drummer Maria Moles.
“I’ve been playing this song solo on my acoustic guitar for a few years, but in the studio Maria’s drums came in and gave it a piquant jolt,” enthused Beesley. “Helen’s screeching and soaring double bass creates a strange, heightened edge, matching the fragmented lyrics.”
Cornflake Sunset is a bright new sophisticated voice in Australian music.
