The Centre for Advanced Histology & Microscopy (CAHM) at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre provides support to researchers using high-end optical microscopes including confocal, spinning disk, multi-photon, super-resolution and spatial proteomic/transcriptomics in their research projects.We are seeking a highly motivated Microscopy Specialist to join our dynamic research Core Facility. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in optical microscopy and a passion for scientific discovery. This role will involve providing essential microscopy support, training, and troubleshooting to researchers across various projects and is responsible for:

  • Maintain records of microscopy maintenance, training and usage.
  • Troubleshoot microscopy equipment and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
  • Discuss and understand analysis requirements with researchers.
  • Provide guidance and support to researchers in selecting appropriate microscopy methods for their experiments.

The ideal candidate will also contribute to our Spatial Biology Platform, advancing cutting-edge research through antibody optimization, and use of multi-spectral imaging technologies.The position is:

  • Basic Salary Range: $76,210.16 to $97,770.40 AUD

EducationSkillsEssential Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong foundation in optical microscopy principles and techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with researchers at all levels.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in microscope training, support, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desireable Requirements

  • Experience optimizing antibody staining techniques for various microscopy applications, ensuring high-quality and reproducible results.
  • Experience with multi-plex immunohistochemistry technologies (e.g. OPAL).
  • Proficiency in image analysis software (e.g., Imaris, Arivis and ImageJ).

1. Proficient in operating and maintaining a wide range of optical microscopy techniques, including widefield, confocal, and slide-scanning microscopes.

2. Collaborate effectively with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds to understand their experimental needs and provide tailored microscopy solutions

3. Development of a good working relationship with others in the Centre for Advanced Histology and the research division

  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to help others as required
  • Provide guidance and support to researchers in selecting appropriate microscopy methods for their experiments.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training on microscopy equipment, including standard operating procedures.
  • Provide ongoing support to researchers, assisting them in acquiring high quality data.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to contribute to research projects and achieve shared goals.
