About the TeamThe Neuro-ophthalmology Unit at The Alfred was established in 2018 under the leadership of A/Prof Anneke van der Walt. In addition, the unit is supported by 4 additional consultants, 3 neuro-ophthalmology fellows and rotating registrars from Ophthalmology and Neurology. The neuro-ophthalmology clinic nurse coordinator and research nurse will be integrated into this team. The neuro-ophthalmology team works closely alongside Ophthalmology, orthoptists, and other neurology subspecialties that include MS and Neuroimmunology (MSNI). The Neuro-ophthalmology service currently runs a Tuesday and a Thursday afternoon and provides limited in-patient consultation services.About the RoleWe invite applications for this exciting Neuro-ophthalmology Clinic Co-ordinator and Research Nurse role in the MS and Neuroimmunology/ Neuro-ophthalmology Unit at Alfred Health. This position provides an opportunity to join a dynamic team of Neuro-ophthalmology clinicians focused on delivering excellent care to people with neuro-ophthalmological disorders at Alfred Health. The incumbent will work closely with a senior nurse consultant, a clinical Research Coordinator, an Ethics and Admin Officer, Allied health specialists, neurologists, endocrinologist and Scientists. The incumbent will act as the Neuro-ophthalmology Clinical Manager and oversee a portfolio of Phases 1-4 of Neuro-ophthalmology trials. Research activities are integrated into the MSNI Clinical trials service with additional study coordinators. The post holder will work closely with people with neuro-ophthalmological illness. The position is ideal for an experienced nurse looking for a new and challenging role.The position is 4 days a week, with some opportunity for flexibility with the timetable.Duties

  • Attend the weekly Neuro-ophthalmology Clinics and assist with patient flow through the clinic
  • Assist with triage of referrals to the clinic and clinic bookings
  • Follow up on clinical results and liaise with patients of the service and other health professionals regarding their care.
  • Arrange and attend the bi- weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting for neuro-ophthalmology
  • Arrange and attend the weekly neuro-ophthalmology operations meeting

Skills & ExperienceEssential

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Venipuncture, ECG and intravenous cannulation skills
  • Undertake a CASA Course every 2 years.
  • Obtain and maintain yearly Basic Life Support accreditation
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Strong and proven time management skills• Have good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Ability to work independently with other services and departments in the hospital and community

Desirable

  • Experience in coordinating clinical research and trials within Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, specifically in neurology or ophthalmology.
  • Proven skills in the management of the activities of a multi-disciplinary team who are engaged in clinical research projects to ensure compliance with protocols and overall clinical objectives.
  • Postgraduate qualification in health and/or management or working towards same
  • Advanced clinical knowledge in MSNI or Neuroscience nursing
  • Open, flexible and innovative and risk taking
  • Support and develop undergraduate students, nursing and associated staff
  • Knowledge of common trial databases: iMedidata, Firecrest, REDcap etc.
