Welcoming people from a wide variety of different backgrounds and experiences is critical to fostering innovation, cultivating compassion, attracting and retaining top talent and providing the best possible cancer care for our patients.YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURECasual RoleThis is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Grade 1 and/or Grade 2 casual dietitian (dependent on experience/skills) to be based within the Nutrition and Speech Pathology Department of this specialist cancer centre.We are seeking dietitians with some acute clinical experience in oncology (minimum of 12 months not including student placements), who are passionate about working in oncology, have demonstrated leadership skills, are hardworking, adaptable and have excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills. A structured and supportive supervision model is provided in addition to opportunities for accessing mentoring and professional development.The successful applicants will provide evidence based specialised nutrition and dietetic services to inpatients and ambulatory patients in a multidisciplinary care setting at the Peter Mac Melbourne, Moorabbin and/or Box hill campuses. This position is not linked with a specific clinical workload, however the successful applicant will work in/across major tumour streams, including head and neck, gastrointestinal and/or haematology, as negotiated within the department. EducationSkillsEssential Requirements

  • Member of Dietitians Australia (DA) and current Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) status or a willingness to join the APD Program
  • Previous experience as a clinical dietitian in a major teaching hospital/acute care facility
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Proven ability to negotiate for effective patient outcomes with staff at all levels
  • Flexible and patient focused approach to clinical workload
  • Proven commitment to own professional development
  • High level word processing and computer skills

Desirable Requirements

  • Current APD status
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary oncology setting

  • 70-80% (approximately) of time spent in patient care/clinical responsibilities
  • Assessment, intervention and multidisciplinary liaison relating to assigned inpatients within 24 hours of issue identification
  • Effective communication with Food Services Department according to relevant deadlines for inpatient meals, supplement and enteral nutrition delivery/service
  • Effective management of ambulatory patients within assigned workload according to Department guidelines
  • 100% completion of all patient related documentation and statistics according to Department/organisation guidelines
  • Effective representation at designated team and ward meetings
  • Appropriate patient review, follow-up and communication as per Department guidelines/care pathways
  • Effective, timely and appropriate handover of ongoing issues within the Nutrition team and/or to other staff or healthcare provider
  • Effective participation in patient management of Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) Program and coordination of the program where appropriate

2. Teaching and education

  • Assists with and participates in dietetic student placements including student supervision as directed by Head of Department/Senior Team
  • 100% participation in all department based continuing education programs (including critical appraisal, continuing education/clinical case conferences)
  • Attends, participates and contributes to relevant seminars/conferences/special interest groups/other continuing education as appropriate
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of lectures/workshops/inservices for the profession of dietetics and Peter Mac, in consultation with Head of Department
  • Participates in the development and review of relevant education resources both internally and externally as appropriate
  • Assists with and participates in education to students, work experience students and/or other health professionals as appropriate

3. Quality improvement activities and service development

  • Participates and contributes to the Department quality improvement program including audits and KPI’s (including leading 1 quality process/project and contributing to another 1, pro-rata based on EFT)
  • Liaises with Head of Department/Senior Team to identify areas of potential improvement, develop processes to measure/improve systems and activities as agreed, and promotes best practice activities
  • Contributes to the development and review of relevant policies, procedures and clinical guidelines where appropriate
  • Acts as an advocate for development of nutrition services within tumour streams
  • Maintains and develops relationship with relevant Services and Departments e.g. Food Services, Allied Health departments, Clinical Services and Pharmacy to provide safe and appropriate care for patients

  • Develop, promote and contribute to evidence/best practice activities and research that lead to improved health/nutritional outcomes for patients in consultation with Head of Department/Senior Team
  • Contribute to raising the profile and position of the Nutrition Department as a leader in oncology nutrition

5. Administration

  • 100% participation in all department based meetings, planning activities (including strategic planning and business/operational planning) and continuing education programs
  • Participation in weekend on-call rosters
  • Participation and rotation to campuses as agreed
  • Maintain all patient confidentiality as per Peter Mac policies and procedures
  • Completion of agreed non-clinical activities as directed/in consultation with Head of Department/Senior Team

6. Professional development

  • Maintain a high standard of knowledge and expertise in professionally relevant areas through ongoing education and professional development
  • Promote and facilitate the development of grade 1 dietitians and allied health assistant staff through support and supervision
  • 100% participation/adherence to Department guidelines for all professional development/competency programs including PG-SGA skills maintenance and peer review
  • Participation in Department supervision program
  • Attends, participates and contributes to relevant seminars/conferences/special interest groups/other continuing education
  • Knowledge and application of the principles outlined in relevant professional and organisational policies and acts (including DAA Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics and the organisations Code of Conduct

7. Information management and reporting

  • 100% completion and maintenance of patient documentation within agreed timeframes (same day for inpatients; next working day for ambulatory patients) and adherence to Department documentation guidelines
  • 100% correct completion and maintenance of workload statistical records by next working day
