About UsThe Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV) has three functions.1. Independently investigating deaths and fires.Certain deaths and fires are reported to Coroners for independent investigation. Their investigations seek to establish the facts – when, where, how and why the death or fire happened.2. Reducing preventable deaths.Wherever possible, the Coroner will suggest ways to prevent similar deaths or fires by making well informed and practical recommendations, based on the evidence before them.3. Promoting public health and safety and the administration of justice.CCOV regularly reports on data and trends regarding preventable deaths in Victoria to help inform public health responses.For more information on the Coroners Court of Victoria, please visitAbout the RoleThe Aboriginal Project Officer sits within the Aboriginal Engagement Unit (AEU) unit of CCOV.The purpose of the role is to engage and consult with local Victorian and other Aboriginal communities and stakeholders to develop a community engagement strategy for CCOV. The engagement strategy aims to improve coronial investigations into passings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to advocate for measures to improve health and wellbeing in their communities.The role requires travel, at times, throughout the state with some out of hours work required.About YouAs the successful candidate, you will have good project management and written communication skills along with the ability to critically examine information, consider options, and identify solutions.You will also possess:
- Specialist knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it
- Specialist ability to work and communicate effectively and sensitively with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and a diverse range of stakeholders to achieve sustainable outcomes
- A sound understanding of the principles of cultural safety and demonstrated ability to effect culturally safe practice
